Interview
by Samantha Samson,
Academic Student
Mr Sorg has been my math teacher for this semester and we recently found out that he will be retirering . I therefore decided to interview him for a look at his teaching career that he has been in since 1965. I thought it would be interesting to see his point of view and in doing that I ended up with a beautiful interview that was actually very interesting and I enjoyed knowing his highlights and downfalls of working as a teacher.

The following interview took place in an empty classroom sitting by the window on a gorgeous sunny April morning.
Q: What made you become a teacher?
A: Well I went to summer camp in Laurention near Mont Laurier from when I was 16 until I was 24 . This summer camp showed me the enjoyment of working with kids aged 14 to 16 I took care of excursions with them and it made me see the good times I can have working with the youth.

Q: When did you come to billings ?
A: I started teaching in 1965 for 5 years on the Montreal island school board . Then I worked in fort Lauderdale for a year and traveled extensively. I then returned to H.S.B and C.V.R for 27 years then came to Adult Ed in 1999 to make a total of 43 years. My wife and I chose New Frontier school board as we found a new home in Ch âteauguay and had our family of three boys all graduated from billings ( but my wife made a request that I was not to teach my own children, she was even willing to go to the principal to prevent it )
Q: Did you like working at billings and what made you come to Nova
A: Yes I met some very wonderful students of all calibers to teach and also great staff members for support. Upon my first retirement in June of 99, then at C.V.R., I was fortunate enough to find a math teaching job here at Nova Centre, here in our home community which enabled me to either walk or cycle and leave the family car to my wife
Q: What are some highlights of your career and what were some struggles ?
A: I've been fortunate enough to have had some very good classes even a few (super-classes) where in I could teach them mathematics and still have a very friendly atmosphere and still remain professional ( doing 10 push-ups for each mistake that I made that were discovered by the students )
Q: What will you be doing during your retirement?
A: I plan to spend more time at my hobbies, which include: canoeing, hiking, gardening, cycling and camping with my wife. I like to go cycling with my group of retired fellows (we call ourselves CARRAVELO). We have our own website.
My ambition would be to “give back” to our community as a volunteer in places such as the food bank and the soup kitchens
I would like to thank Mr. Sorg for his dedication to his work and for all the years that he was able to be with us . I hope he has a wonderful retirement and that he doesn't forget how much we appreciated having him help us with our math problems and we also hope that he knows how much we’re all going to miss him .
QESBA launches Task Force on Internet and Information Technologies
Survey of students, parents and teachers on Internet should provide useful feedback for educators
The Quebec English School Boards Association (QESBA) has established a Task Force on the Impact of the Internet and Related Information Technologies on English Public Schools in Quebec. QESBA President Debbie Horrocks announced that an important survey of parents, teachers and students would be completed to find out more about how, when and why they are using the Internet . The survey was developed by the task force, which will deliver its final report to QESBA in late Spring.
Parents, students and teachers from the New Frontiers School Board are invited to complete this survey which can be found in the upper right-hand corner of the QESBA website. The QESBA website can be accessed at the following address:
